Description

Navarrete is a picturesque town in the La Rioja region of Spain, known for its rich history and architectural heritage. The town was founded in the 12th century by King García Sánchez III of Navarre as a strategic location to defend his kingdom against the Kingdom of Castile. Its name is derived from the Basque words "naba" (valley) and "arte" (between), reflecting its position between two valleys. As a locality on the Camino de Santiago, Navarrete has been welcoming pilgrims for centuries. The town's most notable historical site is the Church of the Assumption, a beautiful example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture built in the 16th century. The church houses a magnificent Baroque altarpiece and a 14th-century Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary. Additionally, the remains of the medieval walls and the ruins of the Castle of Navarrete can still be seen today, offering a glimpse into the town's past as a defensive stronghold.
