Description

Nájera is a historic town situated along the Camino de Santiago, known for its rich history and architectural heritage. Founded by the Celts, it later became an important center during the Roman period. In the Middle Ages, Nájera gained prominence as the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre under King Sancho III, and later as part of the Kingdom of Castile. One of the most significant historical sites in Nájera is the Monastery of Santa María la Real, founded in the 11th century by King García Sánchez III of Navarre. The monastery served as a royal pantheon for the kings of Navarre and later for the kings of Castile. It also provided shelter and assistance to pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago. The monastery's church, a fine example of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, houses the tombs of several monarchs and nobles, making it an important historical and artistic attraction for pilgrims and visitors alike.
