Description

Ayegui is a small town in the Navarre region of Spain, known for its historical significance on the Camino de Santiago. In the Middle Ages, Ayegui was a popular resting point for pilgrims, as it was home to the Monastery of Irache, which dates back to the 8th century. The monastery played a crucial role in providing shelter, food, and medical care to the weary travelers on their spiritual journey. One of the most famous features of Ayegui is the Fuente del Vino, or the Wine Fountain, which is located just outside the Monastery of Irache. This unique fountain, operated by the Bodegas Irache winery, offers free wine to pilgrims passing through the town. The tradition of providing wine to pilgrims dates back to the 12th century and continues to this day, symbolizing the hospitality and generosity of the local community.
