Description
Villafranca del Bierzo is a picturesque town nestled in the Bierzo region, known for its rich history and significance along the Camino de Santiago. Founded in the 11th century by French monks, the town's name, which translates to "French Town," reflects its origins. The monks established the Monastery of San Salvador to serve and provide shelter to the pilgrims who were making their way to Santiago de Compostela. The town is steeped in history, with several notable monuments that pilgrims can visit. Among them is the Church of Santiago, which dates back to the 12th century. This church is particularly significant because it houses the Puerta del Perdón (Door of Forgiveness). Historically, if a pilgrim was unable to continue their journey to Santiago de Compostela due to illness or injury, passing through this door would grant them the same spiritual benefits as completing the pilgrimage. Another important landmark is the Castle of Villafranca del Bierzo, a 15th-century fortress that once served as a defensive structure for the town. Today, Villafranca del Bierzo remains an essential stop along the Camino de Santiago, offering pilgrims a chance to rest and immerse themselves in the town's rich history.
