Description
Villacázar de Sirga is a small village with significant historical importance on the Camino de Santiago. It is best known for its impressive 12th-century church, the Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca. This church is a fine example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and has been a place of worship and refuge for pilgrims for centuries. The church was once part of a larger Templar complex, as the Knights Templar played a vital role in protecting pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca also houses the tombs of several members of the Castilian nobility, including Doña Urraca López de Haro, the wife of King Fernando III of Castile, and their son, Infante Felipe. Additionally, the church features remarkable frescoes and sculptures, such as the Pantocrator and the Virgen de las Cantigas, which have attracted pilgrims and art enthusiasts alike throughout history.
