Description
San Juan de Ortega is a small hamlet in the province of Burgos, Spain, named after the saint who dedicated his life to serving pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Saint Juan de Ortega, born in the 12th century, was a disciple of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and worked on the construction and maintenance of bridges, roads, and shelters along the pilgrimage route. The centerpiece of the locality is the Monastery of San Juan de Ortega, which was founded by the saint himself. The monastery complex includes a church, a hospice for pilgrims, and the tomb of San Juan de Ortega. The church is notable for its Romanesque architecture and the beautiful tomb of the saint, which features detailed carvings of biblical scenes. The monastery has played a significant role in the history of the Camino de Santiago, providing shelter and assistance to pilgrims for centuries. Today, San Juan de Ortega remains a place of rest and reflection for pilgrims as they continue their journey along the Camino de Frances.
