Description

Sahagún is a historic town with a rich heritage, located on the Camino de Santiago. It was founded in the 9th century and became an important religious and cultural center during the Middle Ages. The town is named after Saint Facundo, a Christian martyr who was beheaded by the Romans in the 3rd century. His remains were brought to Sahagún, and a monastery was built in his honor. The Monastery of San Benito, founded in the 10th century, played a significant role in the town's development. It was one of the most influential monasteries in the Kingdom of León and attracted numerous pilgrims. The town flourished thanks to the monastery's influence and the steady flow of pilgrims. Sahagún's architecture reflects its medieval past, with the churches of San Tirso and San Lorenzo being prime examples of the Mudéjar style.
