Description

Monte do Gozo, or "Hill of Joy," is a significant locality on the Camino de Frances due to its historical and symbolic importance. Situated about 5 kilometers from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, it is the first point where pilgrims can catch a glimpse of the cathedral's spires, signifying the near completion of their journey. Historically, Monte do Gozo has been a place of great emotion and celebration for pilgrims who have traveled long distances to reach Santiago de Compostela. Upon arrival at this hill, they would often express their joy and gratitude, sometimes even weeping or singing. In the 14th century, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Mark was built here, and later, in the 20th century, a monument was erected to commemorate the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1989. Today, Monte do Gozo remains a significant landmark for pilgrims on the Camino de Frances, symbolizing the culmination of their spiritual journey.
