Description

Hontanas is a small village in the province of Burgos, Spain, with a rich history tied to the Camino de Santiago. Founded in the 11th century, Hontanas served as a resting point for pilgrims traveling along the Camino de Frances. Its name is derived from the numerous natural fountains (fuentes) in the area, which provided water for weary travelers. The village is home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a 14th-century Gothic-style church that has been an important place of worship for pilgrims throughout the centuries. Additionally, the ruins of the Convent of San Antón, located a few kilometers before Hontanas, are a testament to the village's historical significance. The convent, founded in the 12th century by the Order of Saint Anthony, offered shelter and care to pilgrims suffering from various diseases. Today, Hontanas continues to welcome pilgrims with its traditional stone houses, providing accommodation and services to those on their journey to Santiago de Compostela.
