Description
Camponaraya is a small locality in the region of El Bierzo, situated in the province of LeΓ³n, Spain. Historically, Camponaraya has been a significant stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago due to its strategic location in the fertile Bierzo Valley, which provided ample resources for travelers. The town's history dates back to Roman times, with evidence of Roman settlements in the area. The name "Camponaraya" is believed to be derived from the Latin "Campus Naragia," which means "Field of Nuts," reflecting the agricultural richness of the region. In the Middle Ages, the town grew in importance as a resting point for pilgrims, and several hospices were established to cater to their needs. The Church of San Blas, built in the 18th century, is a notable historical site in Camponaraya, featuring a Baroque altarpiece and a statue of Santiago Peregrino, a symbol of the Camino de Santiago.
