Description

Calzadilla de los Hermanillos is a small village with a rich history dating back to the Roman era. It is located along the ancient Roman road known as the Via Trajana, which was an alternative route to the Camino de Santiago during the Middle Ages. This road connected the cities of León and Astorga, and was used by pilgrims seeking a more direct path to Santiago de Compostela. The village's name, Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, is derived from the Latin word "calzada," meaning paved road, and "hermanillos," which refers to the brotherhoods that maintained and protected the route. The presence of several Roman milestones in the area attests to its historical importance. In the Middle Ages, the village was home to a hospice run by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, providing shelter and assistance to pilgrims on their journey. Today, Calzadilla de los Hermanillos remains a quiet and picturesque stop along the Camino de Santiago, offering a glimpse into the past for those who pass through.
