Description

Auritz / Burguete is a small and picturesque village in the Navarre region of Spain. It is known for its traditional Basque architecture, featuring stone and wood buildings with red-tiled roofs. Historically, Auritz / Burguete has been an important stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago since the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, the village was granted a charter by King Sancho VI of Navarre, which allowed it to develop as a center for trade and services for travelers. The town's strategic location near the Pyrenees made it a popular resting point for pilgrims as they crossed the challenging mountain terrain. The Church of San Nicolás de Bari, dating back to the 13th century, is a significant historical site in the village, as it served as a spiritual refuge for pilgrims during their journey. Additionally, the town's connection to the famous novel "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway, who stayed in Auritz / Burguete while traveling, adds to its cultural significance.
