Description

Airexe is a small Galician village with a rich history related to the Camino de Santiago. It is nestled in the municipality of Palas de Rei, in the province of Lugo. The village's name is believed to have originated from the Latin word "Aeregium," which means "gold mine." This suggests that the area was once known for its gold mining activities during the Roman period. One of the main historical attractions in Airexe is the Church of Santiago, a 12th-century Romanesque church dedicated to Saint James. The church features a beautiful tympanum depicting Saint James as a pilgrim, highlighting the village's connection to the Camino de Santiago. Additionally, the church houses a unique baptismal font, which is believed to have been used for the baptism of the first Christian king of Galicia, King Rechila, in the 5th century. This event marked a significant turning point in the region's history, as it led to the Christianization of the Suebi Kingdom.
